Big Chem wants to weaken health protections on toxics

Every family deserves safe water, clean air, and products that won’t make us sick.

But chronic diseases linked to toxic chemical exposures are on the rise. ​Since 1990, exposure to chemicals have contributed to a 175% increase in cancer.

Right now, big chemical corporations are lobbying Congress to dismantle basic health protections that have resulted in bans on deadly chemicals like asbestos.

They are seeking radical changes in federal law that would allow even more toxic chemicals on the market; make it harder to ban highly toxic chemicals like PFAS (“forever chemicals”); and reduce oversight of chemical companies.

If Congress caves to chemical industry pressure, there will be more toxic chemicals, more cancer, and more profit for polluters.

The burden will be on families, who will pay the price of higher medical costs and cleaning up communities. 

That’s why Congress should not roll back the progress made to our nation’s chemical safety law—the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). In 2016, lawmakers made bipartisan improvements to TSCA that gave EPA more power than it had under the failed 1976 law—to require chemical testing before chemicals are on the market and to take action on dangerous chemicals. 

Rolling that back would put families at even greater risk.
