Correct FAFSA Glitch for Students

Nearly one million prospective college students are projected to receive inaccurate financial-aid offers after a technical glitch.

The application relies on tax information to determine how much aid a family will need to cover college costs. Up to 20% of the 6.6 million forms submitted had errors in the data transferred from the IRS, meaning calculations for aid packages might be wrong.

The new FAFSA application has already had a rough start. It was released in late December, three months later than it usually is. Once families started accessing it, there was error after error.

“I’m particularly worried about the population of students who are teetering on the edge of attending college at all, and these delays could push them away from college,” said Shannon Vasconcelos, senior director of college finance for college admissions advising firm Bright Horizons College Coach.

College decisions for a lot of families are already financially stressful. The added chaos of FAFSA delays and IRS errors do not help.
