Investigate Trump’s Attempt to Deport 600 Guatemalan Kids

Over Labor Day weekend, the Trump administration tried to secretly deport 600 unaccompanied Guatemalan children—some as young as six years old—in violation of federal and international law.

A federal judge intervened just in time, halting the deportation flights and accusing the administration of trying to “evade judicial oversight.” But unless Congress acts, there’s nothing stopping Trump from trying again.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has direct oversight of the executive branch’s immigration enforcement—and it has so far remained silent. That is unacceptable. Congress cannot continue to abdicate its constitutional responsibility while the Trump administration operates in the shadows, targeting vulnerable children for removal without due process.

The children were in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement and awaiting placement with vetted family sponsors. Instead of following the law, Trump’s ICE and DHS tried to ship them to Guatemala on military-chartered flights, without notifying courts, lawyers, or even their families.

This was not a mistake. It was a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny and sidestep legal protections. Immigration policy must reflect our values of compassion, due process, and human dignity—not backroom deportations in the dead of night.

We cannot look away. These are children who fled violence and poverty in search of safety, only to be retraumatized by a government that’s supposed to protect them. If we don’t speak out now, Trump’s administration will escalate these abuses—and silence the courts that stop them.

The American people deserve answers. Who authorized these deportation flights? Why were they hidden from the courts? And what will stop this from happening again?

The Senate Judiciary Committee must launch an immediate public investigation into Trump’s illegal deportation attempt and take concrete steps to prevent future abuses.

Add your name to demand oversight now. Congress must investigate—and protect these children before it’s too late.
