Protect Access to Diverse Books

A book is a powerful thing. Books teach us empathy and inspire big ideas. They help us understand our place in history and think critically about the world around us. Books help show us who we are, and dream bigger about who we can be.

In today’s world, access to diverse, age-appropriate books is more important than ever—but that access is under attack like never before. The past four years have brought an unprecedented number of book bans to classrooms across the country—6,870 in the 2024-2025 school year alone. Politicians are banning books with characters who represent diverse perspectives and experiences, or books that cover important topics like history, science, and race - including books about Martin Luther King, the Trail of Tears, and climate change.

Instead of helping students explore new ideas and different perspectives, these politicians want to control what our children can and can’t read, making it harder for them to learn, grow, and connect with their communities.

No politician should be allowed to keep books away from students. No one should decide for other parents what their kids can or can’t read. Take action now. Add your name and join with NEA to help protect the freedom to read for all students.
