In less than three days of fossil fuel companies asking, the Trump administration moved to open tens of million more acres of the Western Arctic to drilling, without fully weighing the harm to the environment. If finalized, there would be no real oversight: No standard permitting process, few clean up standards, practically nothing to stop it. Grizzly and polar bears, caribou, and rare birds depend on this habitat to survive, and Indigenous communities rely on the region for their livelihoods and traditions. The Western Arctic is too fragile a place to drill. This year, an oil rig contracted by ConocoPhillips collapsed on the North Slope, spilling thousands of gallons of diesel across Arctic lands. The Interior Dept is accepting public comments until July 6. Add your name to keep the Western Arctic off-limits to new oil drilling.
