Stop Trump’s Illegal Firing of Federal Reserve Governor

President Trump just tried to illegally fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook—and we can’t let him get away with it.

Cook, the first Black woman ever confirmed to the Fed’s Board of Governors, has served since 2022 after Senate confirmation. Her 14-year term is protected by law, and she can only be removed “for cause”—not on the president’s whim. Trump’s attempt to oust her based on unproven allegations is not only unconstitutional, it’s a dangerous assault on the independence of our central bank.

The House Committee on Financial Services and the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs must act immediately. These committees have a constitutional duty to investigate executive overreach and protect the integrity of the Federal Reserve. They must launch a full investigation into Trump’s illegal attempt to remove Governor Cook.

Trump has also escalated attacks on Fed Chair Jerome Powell, demanding interest rate cuts to juice the stock market ahead of the election. But those cuts could spark inflation—especially given Trump’s erratic tariff threats—endangering the economy and hitting working families the hardest. The Federal Reserve is meant to operate independently for this very reason.

By targeting Lisa Cook, Trump is sending a clear message: obey or be removed. This is a flagrant abuse of power and a threat to both economic stability and democratic norms.

“I will not resign,” Cook said. “I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022.” Her resolve is clear. Now Congress must stand with her.
