Tell Anthropic: Ethical AI Requires Real Climate Leadership

Anthropic has become one of the most powerful AI companies in the world by promising to develop artificial intelligence responsibly. Now it must show the same responsibility toward the climate crisis.

The company has built its reputation as the "ethical AI" company. Its leaders regularly warn about the risks advanced artificial intelligence could pose to humanity, advocate for stronger safeguards, and emphasize responsibility in the development of powerful technologies.

But when it comes to one of the greatest threats facing humanity — climate change — Anthropic has yet to show the same leadership.

While Anthropic recently joined a major initiative supporting carbon removal, the company still lacks a public sustainability strategy, has made no commitments to run on clean energy, and has not announced significant efforts to reduce the emissions created by its rapidly growing AI operations.

Data shared with Heatmap by market intelligence company Cleanview suggests Anthropic's data centers are among the most carbon-intensive in the industry. As its demand for electricity grows, the company is helping drive additional fossil fuel generation at a time when scientists say emissions must fall rapidly.

Anthropic is also reportedly planning to expand its computing infrastructure, including using capacity from xAI's Colossus data centers, which reporting indicates rely heavily on on-site natural gas turbines.

Carbon removal can play an important role in addressing climate change. But scientists agree that removing carbon from the atmosphere cannot replace the urgent need to cut emissions today.

If Anthropic truly wants to be a leader in responsible AI, it must take responsibility for the environmental consequences of its business.

We call on Anthropic to:

1: Publish a comprehensive climate and sustainability strategy.

2: Set ambitious, transparent targets to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

3: Commit to powering its operations with clean, renewable energy.

4: Announce clean power purchase agreements that support new emissions-free electricity generation.

5: Publicly disclose its energy use and climate impacts through regular sustainability reporting.

6: Invest in clean energy projects and grid improvements that accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels.

7: Ensure that future data center growth supports climate goals rather than locking in decades of additional pollution.

Artificial intelligence will shape the future of our economy and society.

But that future will be far less secure if rising emissions continue to fuel extreme heat, disasters, and instability around the world.

Anthropic has shown that it can lead on AI ethics.

Now it must show that it is equally committed to climate responsibility.

Please add your name to tell Anthropic: Ethical AI requires climate leadership.
