Tell ExxonMobil’s Board: Come Clean About Climate Hacking

Climate advocates tried to expose ExxonMobil. Then hackers came for them.

Now a U.S. trial could finally reveal who paid for a hacking operation that targeted the people fighting to hold Big Oil accountable. Reporting says court filings have linked the alleged scheme to DCI Group, a lobbying firm long affiliated with ExxonMobil. Exxon and DCI deny involvement — but that's not good enough.

The public deserves answers. If anyone connected to ExxonMobil funded, authorized, benefited from, or used hacked materials against climate advocates, Exxon’s board must come clean.

If oil companies or their lobbyists are allowed to benefit from or cover up hacking that targets climate advocates, it will send a terrifying message to researchers, journalists, watchdogs, and advocates: challenge Big Oil, and powerful people may try to destroy you. We have to hold them accountable.

Tell ExxonMobil’s board: Take a stand against hacking and intimidation of climate advocates. Cooperate with investigators now.

For decades, ExxonMobil has faced scrutiny over what it knew about climate change and how long it kept the public in the dark. Climate advocates have fought to uncover the truth — in courtrooms, in Congress, and in the public square.

If those advocates were targeted by hackers while challenging one of the most powerful fossil fuel companies on Earth, that’s an attack on truth, science, and civil rights.

No corporation should be able to hide behind lobbyists, private investigators, or middlemen when hackers violate the privacy of people demanding climate justice, simply because corporate profits could be threatened.

ExxonMobil’s board has a duty to act. It must preserve every relevant record, launch a truly independent public review, cooperate with law enforcement and congressional investigators, and promise never to use hacked or unlawfully obtained materials against climate advocates.

Add your name now and demand ExxonMobil’s board tell the truth. Big Oil does not get to bury climate accountability with dirty tricks.

The petition to ExxonMobil’s Board of Directors reads:

“Come clean about any ExxonMobil-linked role in the alleged hacking of climate accountability advocates. Preserve all relevant records, cooperate fully with investigators, launch an independent public review, and commit never to use hacked or unlawfully obtained materials against climate advocates.”
