Tell Google Maps: Don’t Rename Lake Ontario for Trump

Google Maps just abruptly changed Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for users in the United States — caving to Donald Trump’s latest attempt to rewrite geography for political theater.

Trump issued an executive order directing federal agencies to erase Lake Ontario from U.S. government records and replace it with "Lake America." But Google is not a federal agency. It does not have to turn one of the most widely used maps in the world into a propaganda tool for Trump’s ego.

Lake Ontario is not just an American landmark. It is a shared body of water between the United States and Canada, with a name rooted in Indigenous language and regional history. Changing it on Google Maps tells millions of users that political pressure matters more than truth, history, or respect for our neighbors.

Google already went along with Trump’s "Gulf of America" stunt last year. Now it is doing it again. For one of the biggest companies in the world — a company that once prided itself on not being evil — this is pathetic. Google Maps should be a source of reliable information, not a willing partner in an authoritarian president’s unhinged propaganda campaign.

Add your name and demand Google Maps stop appeasing Trump and restore Lake Ontario as the clear, primary name for users in the United States.

The petition to Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Google Maps leadership reads:

"Stop displaying Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ for users in the United States. Restore Lake Ontario as the clear, primary name on Google Maps, reject politically motivated renaming campaigns, and stop allowing Google’s products to become tools for Donald Trump’s propaganda."
