Local elections are supposed to serve the people who live there. But that’s not what’s happening anymore. Across the country, pro-fossil fuel, pro-data center PACs are pouring money into local races — including elections that most voters have never even heard of. These PACs are backed by Big Tech and far-right groups like Turning Point. In Arizona, these groups are spending millions in obscure utility elections to elect pro-industry candidates who will make them more money, while making us sick and polluting the planet. These aren’t overlooked local contests anymore. They’re battlegrounds for billion-dollar corporate agendas. And when their money floods local elections, it can change who wins office, and ultimately, what forces those elections serve. Instead of being accountable to the people who live and pay bills in these communities, decision-makers are increasingly tied to the polluting interests funding their campaigns. That means critical decisions about energy, water, and infrastructure are being shaped by billionaires who rarely have to live with the consequences. Local elections shouldn’t be for sale to the highest bidder. And our communities shouldn’t be used as testing grounds for national political strategies or corporate expansion. Local lawmakers must hear our opposition. Lawmakers can regulate data centers, limit the influence of corporate PACs, and ensure that local elections remain accountable to local voters, not outside money. Add your name to tell lawmakers around the country: we don’t want Big Tech using our local elections to push data centers.
