The world is bringing back landmines. The UN must stop it.

Nations around the world, including the United States, are making a deadly mistake.

Governments are pulling out of treaties banning antipersonnel landmines — weapons the world already agreed were too cruel to exist — and openly planning to deploy them again. If the United Nations doesn’t act now, civilians will pay the price for decades.

Landmines don’t end wars. They outlive them. They stay hidden in fields, roads, and villages long after the fighting stops — blowing off limbs of farmers, killing children at play, and turning entire communities into permanent danger zones. The United Nations must recommit to banning landmines now.

Tell the United Nations: “Ban landmines — for real. Condemn any country bringing them back. Enforce the global ban before more lives are destroyed.”

Poland just announced plans to produce and deploy antipersonnel landmines along its eastern border. The United States is rolling back long-standing restrictions. Other governments are watching closely, deciding whether they can follow without consequences.

If this spreads, landmines will once again scar Europe and beyond.

This is exactly the moment the United Nations exists for. The UN General Assembly and Secretary-General António Guterres have the power to draw a hard line — to condemn new production and deployment, reinforce the Mine Ban Treaty, and stop this rollback before it explodes into a humanitarian disaster.

Silence now would send a dangerous message: that cruelty is negotiable.

Sign now. Because banning landmines only works if the world is willing to defend the ban.

The petition to the United Nations reads: “Ban landmines — for real. Condemn any country bringing them back. Enforce the global ban before more lives are destroyed.”
